Carefully following each step of the manual, and using my little 'know-how' of PCs I was able eventually to get this recording well. I have bought a few other cheap USB tape converters and in terms of sound quality this is crisp and probably one of the better ones. Shame it doesn't have a rewind function but in some way makes up for it by having a mini midi speaker attached. Though why have a switch to shut off the speaker when it also has a volume to turn completely down is ait baffling. Overall 4 stars for me; would give 5 stars but not tried out enough yet. Final word: Try all alternatives in your speaker control panel if like me, it began to play the music too loud and was unable to turn down on the Audacity software.

It is the main microphone level volume you need to turn down. Put simply, it doesn't convert to MP3 but to WAV. You need additional software for MP3. Setting it up on your PC is straightforward only if you have above average IT knowledge and skills. It's definitely not user-friendly in that respect.
Having said that, the instruction booklet is exceptionally well-written (though it needs a section on setting up in Windows 7 now that that operating system is the standard - the Vista instructions work in 7 with a little flexibility) and the results I have obtained so far have been very good. A good product that could be better if it had an installation Wizard and an MP3 conversion program built in.
